What can I say, I went a little nuts last week. :hide

anyway, super fun guit - I've had a few MIM Tele Deluxes that I installed Lollar Regals and appropriate pots and such, but this just has a little something more. Just a little bit clearer pushing an amp, and feels super good - I was leery of 70s Fender quality, but this dude is super playable.

Jazzmasters and Tele Deluxes...no, I'm not starting a Sonic Youth tribute band, but I'm almost ready!

Congratulations - that guitar looks amazing. For those of you who don't own a '74 Deluxe - they are amazing guitars! I am a les paul guy. I don't like strats or telecasters but bought a '74 deluxe in the original yellow finish. First off they sound amazing, and I love the original pickups and the guitar has an amazing feel. I have vintage guitars and this guitar is right up there in feel and quality, although the early 70's were supposidly a bad time for gibson/fender quality.

And last, the large headstock looks so much better than the pee-wee telecaster headstocks, it's the icing on the cake for an amazing guitar.

I believe they only did the large-strat headstock for a year or two, and that's what helps make the '74 model so cool!

The real quality dip, aside from the heavy ash they sourced in the 70's, was around 77. Equipment was wearing out and tolerances were getting pretty far out of whack. CBS changed the payscale to piecework around then, too, so body contours became a rumor.

    Nice guitar, enjoy!

    Thanks, dudes!

The pickups really are great - this thing still sounds like a Tele, but it’s BIG and pushes the front end of the amp a lot more, but still super clear. I’m usually not a humbucker guy at *all* - in my hands it’s just all mud - but this is a whole other thing.

    Cheers!

I re-read my original post where I said I don't like strats and teles. That sounds harsh - I should have said they are not my favorites, because of the single coil pickups and I don't like the middle pickup on stats where I strum. But you are 100% right - this guitar still sounds like a tele - without the hum and it feels great and is a thrill to play.

And really captures a rolling stones sound and vibe too!

That's a really cool guitar! Honestly though, my eyes were really drawn to the chairs, lol. Those are cool chairs! :)

Super Stones-y for sure - I played this recently through a bandmates amp that is a Kendrick-modified Showman to have a much more “tweed” sound - it was glorious! I had to bust out a little “Can’t You Hear Me Knockin’”. Even inspired me to get a tweed thing of my own - Tungsten Buckwheat on the way now.

Ha, I posted this photo on Facebook, Instagram, and here - and every time someone comments on the chairs. Yep, they’re cool! Hand-me-downs from a friend of my lady’s, actually.

How do you guys feel about the headstock? Am I the only one who loves the big-vintage-strat headstock on these guitars?

Owned an Oly White '73 some years back. Regret selling it, but needed the cash and an acquaintance in well known band had just received a record advance and offered me stupid money for it.

I'm not usually a fan of natural finishes but it looks so good on a Deluxe.

Agreed! I’ve always wanted one of these in the walnut/mocha finish, tho - that’s my favorite.

It’s those giant Seth Lover wide range pickups I love! I bought a set from a ‘73 Deluxe and use them on a personal build. I can’t put my finger on how they differ from a PAF, but maybe because they’re a hotter wind (10+K), they have a smoother punch?

Nice guitar! That's actually my favorite type of telecaster.

Very nice, I like the pick guards on the deluxe for some reason. It looks more “done”. I wanted a natural Tele to go with my dad’s ‘74 Strat and ‘75 P-bass but haven’t had the funds to do so.
