For some terrible reason you lose all your gear and have to start from scratch with only $1000. What do you get and why?

    Mine:
    Fender HRDIII (used) $500
    Fender MIM tele (used) $400
    Behringer Tuner $30
    Joyo Ultimate Drive $30
Cables some kind of DIY board $40
    --------------------------------------------
    total $1000

Loose everything? I play seven other instruments besides guitar...the easiest to replace would be a solid body, preferably a MIM strat and Cube 80XL, ~$500. I'd need another $2000 to find firesale deals on entry level replacements, getting lucky to boot...:( I might know enough about equipment and setup, and how to shop, to could get by with the right entry level stuff, maybe. Could be fun to try.

I'd pay some thugs to help me get all my gear back, or use the 1000 for my insurance deductible. ;)

But I like your thinking: very basic. A Baja Tele for me. Amp is a solid choice. I have that Joyo OD as a backup. But I'd prefer a Boss TU3 used.

Used redstripe Peavey Bandit ($200) a Valeton Dapper ($150) and a pre-owned Godin Session S/S/HB ($500). The rest would be spent on accessories.

    I'd quit.
It'd just be the beginning all over again, and I know how many thousands I'd spend trying to reaquire.

it would be impossible for 1K. I play pedal steel, lap steel, dobro, mandolin, bass, as well as guitar.

Kinda what I was thinking only for me I'd say two hookers and bottle of good Scotch should do it. This music gear thing in highly overrated. ;)

    Ha!
I'd get basically what I use now ( or at least my main setup for almost 20 years)
    A MIM Fender Strat
    A used Blues Jr.
    A Boss Blues Driver
    - a Planet Waves NS headstock tuner
( Then could ramp up to more pedals over time...)
    OR:
The best under $1000 Martin I could find

The fact that I did not even think of this shows you how old school I am.

Bias, and a MIM Tele with a modern C and 22 frets and I could run for a long time.

But to play with a band... same Tele, Boss Katana 100 watt head, and borrow a cab for jamming until I could buy a cab.

Mac, iTunes access, thumping bass PA, and a disco ball.

DJ ant-riv is a hit with ALL the ladies while you guitar nerds are sitting alone in your bedroom.

Now if it was 1970 again ...

This is a prime opportunity to move away from the electric guitar money pit; I'd buy a metal body resonator, a big brass slide, and I'd have enough reason to play the blues all day.

I'd scour CL and GC's used section for good used gear.
A Squier Vintage Modified Strat for around $200.
A Jet City or Blackstar (or similar) tube amp for around $300.
A small Pedaltrain for around $100.
A tuner and boost for around $75 each.
    A Zoom G3 for $100.
Then use the leftover $150 for cables, picks, etc.
