I played drums for years and had a set of mij Boss pedals in storage.

I got the urge to play guitar again and decided to rebuild my pedalboard.

I could do it again, with the following, used gear:

    Fender Pro Jr IV Tweed
Fender Road Worn Strat/Epi Les Paul
    Barbershop V2/Archer Ikon
    Saucy Box
    Tuner, cables

I have and use this setup on a regular basis.

    YMMV

Used LP studio with 57 Classic pups $650
Used Roland Blues Cube (Boss Drive Special version) $350
    Cord

I actually have this right now and am completely satisfied with it.

The Boss drive special version is designed to sound much like an old Marshall Blues-breaker with KT66s. These are solid amps that sound very good at any volume.

    All used, obviously...

    Ibanez AM93 semi-hollow ($400)
    Quilter Interblock 45 ($180)
    Tweed 1x12 w/creamback (standing offer from a friend- $150)
    Keeley Delay workstation ($180)
Leaves $90 for a drive pedal. Can I get a SNS special Amp Eleven for $90?

That's one idea anyway. It'd be hard not having the Strat, but I'd rather just get back to playing, then save for the right Strat. That Ibby satisfies my semi-hollow/humbucker itch just fine. The Strat is where I want to spend money. Oh yeah, and a real head.

Friends would hook me up with cables and accessories, IF it was all gone (there's cables and crap squirreled away all over the house). Actually, if this really went down, I could see my buddy just giving me that cabinet to help me get back up and running. Maybe even the Bassbreaker 007 we pass back and forth with that cab.

Used Squier Classic Vibe Tele - any variety you want for around $350. I'm not a Tele-first guy, but a Tele is super versatile and would get me through anything I wanted to play.

Tech 21 Fly Rig v2 ($300 new, because it has a tuner)

    Used Tech 21 Power Engine 60 (+/- $300)

If I have to buy again, I won't be buying any clones though they sound great.
Also, used, everything. Prices here are very different but these >
Guitar: PRS SE Std / Gretsch Streamliner
Amp: Anything clean with master volume (Bugera/ Ibanez/ VHT)
    Even Solid state is fine.
Pedals: OCD/ EQ/ Analog delay/ Tremolo (Flanger, if money left)

I'll also buy a cheap Ribbon mic & an interface if some money is left.

    A good stereo.
There is enough good music out there to listen to without me adding my incessant noise to it.
However, since the "starting with only $1000" thing is purely hypothetical, I've still got ALL of my gear, so I guess the rest of you will have to continue to suffer.

I'll go with new gear because used fluctuates too much to be a fair idea of what you can buy for $1K.

    Classic Vibe Strat - $350
    Blackstar Studio 10 6L6 - $550

    Leaves $100 for accessories...

For my use, I need to be able to run silent and with an amp.
I figure a boss me-50 should work for effects, $150
    Boss katana 50 for $200
MIM strat of some kind, $500
$150 for cables and picks and strings should be enough.

I'd buy a nice used acoustic for $900, maybe a Guild or a Larrivee. With the remaining $100 I'd get a TC Electronic PolyTune clip-on tuner, a D'Addario EJ16 3-Pack with a String Winder/Cutter tool, a strap, some polish, and a pack of Fender Heavy picks.

Then, I'd go busking with it until I made enough money to buy a Dumble and a '59 burst. :)

All used, which I do anyway (why wouldn't anyone and everyone?):
    Axe:
PRS SE of some sort $450

    Live:
    Fulltone OCD $80
    Boss DD-3 $60

    Recording / practice:
    Guitarix amp sim
    Rakarrack effects sim
Both free / open-source and top quality. Linux is amazing for musicians, but it's not heavily-marketed so people don't know. I'd love to explore these more but I'm lucky to have an Axe-Fx at home.

That's my minimum, as I mostly play jams where amps with reverb are available. If I needed an amp I'd go with a Blues Junior at $400.
