Walk into a guitar store, look for the guitar of your dreams, right color, right shape, pup choice, ect..then, go to a guitar you don't really like asthecticly, play it, if it feels and sounds better than your dream guitar, buy it!

Oh yea, play it through whatever amp you can afford less the price of the guitar.

I think it's easier to get tone from a great guitar and so-so amp than the other way round.

If I had no gear I had better have lots more than $5K in my paypal account! :bonk
Thats a tough question. So are we talking what I can get gear for or retail prices?
Heres what I have and play most and close to what I paid. I am forever searching for the best deal on gear.
PRS 513 Rosewood (cost me nothing from PRS artist stock Thanks P&W those guys are the best dow there in Stevensville)
Nash 52 Tele with Lollars $800 used
Badcat Hotcat 1x12 combo$1000 used from a mistag at Guitar Center gotta love those dummies sometimes
Alessandro Working Dog Rottweiler $800 used
    Badcat Panther head used $1700
Tone Tubby BROWN 2x12 cab $300 used
    Fulltone Clyde Deluxe
    Fulltone Fulldrive 2
    Fulltone Supa Trem
    Boss CE2
    Boss DD5
All these pedals I think I paid less than $500 for used
Thats pretty close to $5K ($5100 give or take) and thats all I need.
Now I just gotta get rid of a tone of other stuff. I might substitute my 67 Vibrolux for the Alessandro but thats a tough call too. They are both awesome. :Devil

I often wonder how seven year old threads get pulled back up to the top...

    That said, cool topic.

    '63 Reissue 335
    Strat partscaster
    Fender Princeton or similar
    Boss Tuner
    Morley Wah
    A couple ODs/distortions (Analogman/Fulltone/Way Huge)
    Fulltone Deja Vibe
    Way Huge Aqua Puss
Cables, picks, strings and spare tubes
Gibson L-00 (or Eastman E20 00ss if the money runs short)

    Yep, that'll do.

Interesting, let’s see. Taking this seriously. Used prices assumed:
Guitar: Tom Anderson HSH with coil splitting and such ($1800)
    Amp: Ceriatone JM100 ($1200)
    Cab: Port City 1x12 ($400)
    Speaker: Vintage EV12L ($100)
    Other: Fryette Powerstation ($500)
    Other (2): Synergy SYN-1 ($500)
Other (2): Synergy Module (BE or metroplex) ($400)

    -Extra $100 towards price discrepancies-

$3,500 for an amp and a cab
$1,300 for putting together a nice partscaster
$70 for building a treble booster
    The rest for the cables

In reality, I own 40 guitars, 12 amps..., but I could probably live with the above.

For the pedals, all I need is a treble booster. I probably have 30+ pedals, but I onlty use a treble booster that I put together a few years ago.

$1,300 is enough for a really nice partscaster. I do all the work from finishing, leveling frets to setup, so I don't need to pay someone for the labor.

    If used allowed:

Fender Richie Kotzen Telecaster (case included)
Pacifica 611 HFM (and a hard case)
Les Paul Studio (with a fat neck and case)
    Supro Black Magick
    Fender Bassbreaker 18/30
I'll make my pedalboard so I have a nice budget for pedals, straps, cables, etc.
