Back in the early 80s, every country guitar picker tried to cop that guitar solo. It was tough, especially since your only option to slow it down was a record player that had 16 rpm. No one I knew had any fancy tape machine that had multiple speeds. So that was it. Tough solo under any circumstances. The steel solo is iconic as well. I need to revisit that one one of these days.

Billy Joe Shaver is one of the finest gentlemen in the entire country music business - and I sure miss Eddy

This one has to be on the list.

The juxtaposition of the super-sad music with the (supposedly) positive message of the lyric is sublime. It's very meta. Country music of that era was ALWAYS about breaking up and honky-tonking and being lonely, so you can imply from this song that the guy knows it's going to end up badly in the end.

This is one of my personal favorites. Robbie did a great job of capturing and updating Buck's style to match with a great lyric.

Sort of shocked at all the votes for "Will the Circle be Unbroken." Never cared much for it. Maybe it's the only country song some people know?

I don't really listen to country music, but when I was young country was, much like rock, all around all the time and you couldn't avoid getting exposed to it.
Although I don't listen to country, I have over the years gotten paid to play country music, which is a gas to play.
But there is a song that I remember from the 60s that I never hear, and haven't heard for years, anywhere.
I don't remember who did it, but the name of the song is "Skip A Rope" and I think it was on the chyarts getting airplay in the mid 60s.

For me, anything by Marty Robbins or Willie Nelson. I mean El Paso or Pancho & Lefty?! Forget it. Timeless

Conventional country would probably be Marty Robbins song "White Sports Coat",

While cosmic country would be the Byrds "You Ain't Goin' Nowhere":

Beat me to it. When I was a young whipper snapper, my dad had an old F100 with 8-track player and I fondly remember often listening to the Man in Black on the way to grandmother's house in the country. I was always a suburban kid, but with a major appreciation for country life at times. I always think of Cash when someone says country. I like the old outlaws. :beer Also the old school guys like Glen Campbell and among the "newer" ones, guys like Brad Paisley, Vince Gill, Alan Jackson, etc. They are still old school at heart. Miley Cyrus represents the OPPOSITE of that. :facepalm
