Your Band's Name?

Summer is kinda dull for a teacher/student. Between working on research for my dissertation and writing songs, I have a lot of time for lame threads. So....

How did your band come up with it's name?

Mine:
Bernard Marx and the Dystopians.

It's taken from Aldous Huxley's Brave New World. We thought it carried a kind of a hip vibe with just enough pseudo-intellectualism to win over the hipsters. We play glam-rock (Bowie, Queen, T.Rex, etc) and Bernard Marx is an alpha male character with an inferior physical stature and unorthodox ideas about sexual relationships. It seemed appropriate.

"The Daddy Os"

We play 50's and early 60's rock n' roll. Easy to remember. Flows off the tongue when we're speaking to the audience. Listeners immediately get an idea of what we play. I don't particularly like the name but it serves a purpose and works REALLY well for us and for booking agents so who cares what I think.

Weird Party. I think it came from a friend having said he was bored and wanted to find a weird party. We think of it also as being a political party of sorts. Having said that we party quite a bit and we do party weird.

Toledo is built on an old swamp called The Black Swamp. And we thought we'd try to denote the semi-funky, greasy kind of stuff we play.

We employed a ridiculously anal process of picking a name that was kind of scientific - and proved end in a result that was fairly well recieved. As a group - we created a list of around twenty or thirty possible names. We took them from a bunch of sources. In order to be on the list - there had to be no other band using the name, the dot com website domain name needed to be available - and there had to be no real strong sexual connotation to it such that if someone were searching for it - they would end up in a sea of porn sites on the internet.

From that list - we had the band members rate each possible name - on a scale of 1 -4. The top four vote getters were submitted to all of our friends for thier input in a formal survey.

The top four possible names were:

nine 8 central
frommanyone
pedal car bandits
casual rex

nine 8 central won. It was my wife's suggestion. It was my second choice. I liked frommanyone.

Jym Chapman and The Migrant Workers

I'd been doing side-project solo stuff for years as Migrant Worker. It was just my little outlet for stuff that didn't fit with the bands I was in at the time. When I was forming the current band, I found out some guys in VA had the name "Migrant Worker" copywritten, and owned the .com domain too. So I figured, WTF, I'll just complicate the name a little more.

Sorta turned out to be really prophetic, as for the first year it was just me and a cast of revolving players. Hell, we still haven't landed our "real" bassist yet. Anyhow, we're here:

We are on the banks of the Columbia River just outside of the Hanford Nuclear Reservation. Seemed appropriate. We are trying to come up with a logo that doesn't reference the Simpsons.
