I picked up an old Yamaha SE 150 (strat-ish) from a friend a little while back that he got from a local pawn shop for $70 without a case. It only had one humbucker ( I since added a middle one), mohagony neck and body and amazing tone!

I put a bunch of forstner bit holes in it to lighten it up and it is now my main guitar!!! Not much to look at but the playability and tone makes me fear I could never find another one that could replace it:eek:

Any other great but cheap guitar stories out there?

I bought an SX Tele copy from Ebay for $110, and pimped it out with a bunch of upgrade parts. I've got less than $500 in it, and it smokes. To be perfectly honest, I could've potted the pickups, put a bone nut on it, and given it a fret dress, then called it a day. Those things are pretty decent stock!

This one just happens to be my favorite strat. Imagine that... It rings like a bell and the harmonics just jump off the fretboard. I did install Fralin Woodstocks which were a huge improvement.

I have a PRS Santana SE, which I ought on eBay for $350. I hated the stock pickups, so I installed a traditional set of Duncans - JB/59 - and replaced the pots with push pull pots to split the coils. Now it is an extremely visatile guitar, offering dual humbuckers, or single coils. The neck, balance and hardware are all really fine, although I also replaced the tuners with locking PRS tuners just because I could. Great guitar. Total price - under $600.

80's MIJ tele - I added Lollars and a four way switch. Great guitar - darkest rosewood fingerboard I've ever seen.

    80's Alvarez Yairi dreadnaught. $400.
MIJ Fotoflame Tele, $400. Put some Fralins in it.

(I'm not saying $400 is 'cheap,' and many will have better stories, but these are memorable deals to me.)

Cort Matt Murphy sig (MGM1) is a really nice playing & sounding guitar (with no mods) for under or around $300 used. Think cross between LP & PRS. Dano DC reissue (with some fret tweaking & new pots) is quite a toneful fine player for under $200 used.

Agile AL-2000 used from a forumite a few years ago complete with JB's already in it for about $175. Probably my best playing and sounding guitar overall. Next would by my Epi Del Rey with Kent Armstrong pickups for $300. Needed some neck work though.

G&L Tribute series ASAT. Seriously under-rated guitars...

A toss-up between an ’80s Fernandes Strat copy with old van Zandt pickups ($400) or my mesquite Cardinal ($600): both recent Emporium finds and as good, in their way, as any pricy boutique items.

(Not that I've got anything against pricy boutique items...)

On the acoustic front it's got to be my 1927 National Tricone squareneck: $50 out of the classified ads. But I don't think that's quite what the OP intended...
