It can boost, smooth out, add sustain, and somehow even seems to add a little clarity to my signal chain. It's pretty much always on for me.

Was stacking for awhile with all kinds of different boosters, pre amps and ODs... I find I get more headroom and overall clarity and oomph just running clean and adding pedals as I need them. Probably better to spend time perfecting your clean tone to your preference then add pedals to it as you need.
