Yeah, I’m a bottom feeder, I’ll admit it. I love taking old, antiquated gear and making it work. I have an old Ashly CL52 that I love. It’s a seriously good sounding/feeling compressor. Low noise, warm, smooth...basically the stuff that you’d want from a good compressor, ya know?

I’m just curious if you guys have some (not-so-) secret weapons for compressors (and preamps, if y’all wanna chat about those as well) that you dig.

I used the ART Pro VLA II for a while. For a budget unit it seemed to do the trick. Lots of control.

I regret selling my Behringer rack gear and mixers. Say what you will about cheap gear but Behringer compressor, preamp, and mixers never failed me or coloured the tone.

I might end up going the DBX route though for cheap decent compressors.

Loving my Donner UltraComp ( pedal compressor ) it sure has tightened up my 6505+ sound for recording.

Also an RNC user. Got it for like $110 used. Does what it says on the box without too much color.

Right now I am between the Alesis 3630 and DBX 1066 Compressor/Limiter/Gate. The only difference between the 2 is the DBX has XLR input and output

I had a cheap Rane dc24 in a bass rig I really liked. Dual band comp with separate outs and sidechains. Didn't use it on stuff other than bass that often, but I liked it in a biamp bass rig.

And the dbx you can probably still get parts for it and still find someone to repair it if needed.

I bought a KT2A, and I'm pretty impressed with it.

    Cheap compressors are my specialty!
    • old DBX 160A - great on bass guitar, kick/snare drum - under $200 used sometimes
    • old Symetrix 501 (look for the toggle switch pwr - some say they changed the audio circuit as well when they updated) - $100 used if you're patient?
    • old Aphex Compellor with XLR I/O - built like a tank and works great. Cheap!
    • old Drawmer DL241 - just turn off the "auto" feature and it's a very useful compressor/expander/gate - can find under $300 used if you're patient
    • ART Pro-VLA II - everybody needs an optical comp. Klark Teknik makes an LA2A copy now - might be a single channel alternative.
    • Warm WA76 - everybody needs an 1176-ish FET comp. The Klark Teknik version is even cheaper but I have no experience with it.

Love it! Thanks! I really dig Warm Audio’s stuff. Super impressive for the dough. I’ve got the WA-12 and I’m always happy with it.
