The mix of Johnny Marr's rhythm jangle and the ambience-drenched slide is just amazing!
The first tone master I thought of...love his tone and his excellent playing!
...and every time I've seen/heard him "live"!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! He was always my favorite guitarist, but Derek is creeping up on him in my book.
Porcupine Tree on Arriving Somewhere Not Here. I bought a Hot Cat because of that dvd.
for me that's easy
duane's tone throughout the album....
Any live Mountain from the 70s.
Paul Kossoff's tone on Free Live.
Mick Ralph's tone on some old Mott the Hoople bootleg I have.
Martin Barre's tone on some Jethro Tull live boots from '74-'77.
Eddie VH - Live Without A Net
Good Call - Anything on that ACL Wilco appearance is a clinic in great live guitar tone (and finding space in a dense mix) for me. Nels, Tweedy and Pat all have great tone, command of their sound, musical instincts and chops.
Saw them in Milwaukee at the Riverside Theater on their tour to support the Whole Love, with Nick Lowe. Was blown away. Walked away deciding whether I should be discouraged about my own playing and bands, or inspired. Settled on inspired; healthier.
Same here ! Don't have a Hot Cat yet, but I will get one as soon as possible…
There's the Jeff Beck's - Live at Ronnie Scott too !
And, for the general sound production : Nine Inch Nails - Tension tour 2013.
The majourity of responses here
a) Make me feel like an unrepentant rocker
b) Make me feel younger than I actually am
c) Leave me convinced to keep pushing for new tones versus chasing old ones.
Not meant to offend or judge. Just an observation.
I'm kind of with you on c)
I was into the whole chasing old tones but now I'm trying to figure out my own sound. But inevitably it will sound something like someone elses
The Who "Live At Leeds"
Yeah, this one. This tone has put me on an endless quest and cost me more money than I care to admit.
Raw - Neil Young "Weld"
Sophisticated - David Gilmour "Live in Gdansk"
as far as I know, his main fuzz has always been a Boss FZ-3 (*gasp* for all the Boss haters)
Ya beat me to it!

No recording THAT I KNOW of can give the Wall of Sound the justice it gave, I experienced it at the Civic Center in Philly in Aug, 74.
