I love the expressiveness of a guitar. I grew up with it - my grandpa was a gigging jazz musician and guitar teacher.

But I've always been as attracted to synth sounds be they in rock, hip hop, metal, whatever...

What are your favorite examples, be they recordings you did, or of others, where the guitar sound is so mangled as to not readily be recognizable as a guitar. Bonus points for what pedal, plugin, technique etc. was used.

Also, I have been raised with near 100% word of mouth exposure to music, rarely having had a TV (hippie parents) or radio (city living, no car + hippie parents). Spent many years in small clubs seeing local regional acts. As such, I know as much or more obscure stuff as mainstream, so there may be really well known examples I don't know about.

But again, YOUR favorites, obscure, by you, or well-known.

Just about anything from Rage Against the Machine. Picked up their self-titled when I was about 13 and saw inside that all noises were made by guitar, bass, and drums; bringing me to pick up the guitar hoping to recreate those wacky sounds

"Stadium Arcadium" by the Chili Peppers has lots of that. Especially in the overdubs. All types of new sounds I've never heard before. Any other band I'd assume it was synths or who-knows, but with Frusciante good things usually happen with that band.
Here's "Wet Sand" from that album: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-66h7hHWx8Q

+1 for Godspeed You! Black Emperor. Check out around 7:25 on this clip, for the longest time I thought it was a sample of an opera singer.

Here's one I'm curious about, and I'm sort of embarrassed to ask this question. Is the metallic sounding intro done on a guitar?

The motorbike sounds Todd Rundgren did in the title track from Meatloaf's Bat Out Of Hell

The rocket launch sounds in Boston's Third Stage

The 'trombone' on Junior Brown's version of Riverboat Shuffle

There are about half a dozen examples in that clip. I remember getting the record when it came out and being blown away by the sounds. Some musician friends and I assumed that Fripp was doing the elephant sounds. I was a fan of Fridays and saw this performance when it originally aired. It was quite educational. The show from tour was awesome too. The twin synth guitars on Sheltering Sky blew our minds.

I'm shocked when I see reference to a band I like on TGP. So far this thread has mentioned at least 5.

    Let me guess:

    RATM
    U2
    Queen
    SVR
    RHCP

    Just kidding... or not?
