Here are the contenders for "Vox in a Box" pedals. I've only tried the Menatone Top Boost in Can, but with mixed results. And I'm sure I've left some out, so feel free to add to the list

Top contenders as of 3-11-09
- BJF Emerald Green Distortion Machine (EGDM)
- Menatone Top Boost in a Can
- Hip Kitty Oxblood

- Tech 21 Liverpool
- Wampler Cranked AC

Hardly/Not mentioned as of 3-11-09
- MAD Effects DD30

- Lovepedal Death of a Vox

-
Carl Martin AC-Tone

Which Vox/Matchless style drive pedal is your fave and why? Also, do they work well with certain amps and not so much with others?

And please, no comments unless you've actually owned it. ;)

Well my 'Vox-In-A-Box' choice probably isn't your standard sounding Vox-like drive - its a CabaretLinda Silver Kiss Mk.1. IMO, it sounds just like a cranked SS Vox Super Beatle - nails the earliest Tom Petty sounds like 'Listen To Her Heart' and 'Need To Know'.

I actually owned a Catalinbread Silver Kiss Mark II. It had some of the Vox shimmer and a nice clean boost, but I could never get a singing midrange or any "swirl" out of it like a cranked AC15 or AC30.

TBIAC for me, because clean it has the voice and detail and shimmer and chime and honk. And it just gets better from there. I had an Underground 30 and an AC30 when I bought it and sold both. (Also sold a Plexi and an 18 watt when I got the KOTB, MFB, and WMB from the same maker)

The Mk.2 was a very different sounding pedal from the Mk.1 - much more polite, less aggressive. They really aren't comparable in fact.

The Zia drive isn't a Vox in a box.. at least wasn't to my ears.

The EGDM is great but it's one of the few voxish OD's I've tried.

No mention of the Wampler Cranked AC? The clips sounded pretty killer.

MAD Effects DD30 is my go to Vox. I use it for turning my Fender into a Vox for all my Interpol needs.

I have a Carl Martin AC-Tone. It's a really great pedal, with some cool options (2 drive settings, powerful boost), it sounds really nice, but I don't have a clue if it really nails a Vox vibe.
