No problem, don't waste all that preparation, just marry one of the guests.

Do you suppose it will be a magical epilepsy cure?

pretty crazily ridiculous when you first read it....but when you think about the concept of arranged marriage in rural india....(the uneducated parts)

It's basically a mix n match where sometimes the bride and groom don't even see each other till the wedding day...so putting in a replacement doesn't seem that far off...

although the fact that he was the brother-in-law makes me suspect some foulplay:D

Nothing said it was the brother in law. Just a member of their family.

Arranged marriages are not exclusive to "uneducated parts" of India.

What is interesting is the rate of divorce in "educated western" societies. Maybe arranged marriages have some merit to them because most people can't really be trusted to make the right choices on their own...

    But wait, there's more!

Alas, no pictures. But the Times of India did include a handy drawing as a helpful visual.

Sounds like the plot to a Bollywood film.

Exactly. I make this point in class frequently. We often think our culture is superior. However, when it comes to love and marriage we suck, big time.

The vast majority of Indians have arranged marriages. A PhD I work with, he and his wife are from India and have had a very successful arranged marriage.
