Yes you are stuck on an desert island and you left all your picking techniques at home, except one.

choose your favorite picking technique for this adventure

Fingerstyle. I'd be afraid to lose my pick if I chose any other. ;)

Seriously, I always feel at home playing fingerstyle.

Yea, I thought at first fingerstyle, but then so many of my favorites always have the pick in hand for hybrid, Frisell, Sco, Lage,,,
I would want to maintain that kind of sound.

If I was on a desert island, I think I'd take up boat building. Screw the guitar.

I voted hybrid pick/finger as that's how I play when more than one note at a time (or comping) is involved, but most of the single note stuff would be some alternate & economy with hammer/pull.... bit of everything really

This. Simply sounds better and gives WAY more options.

Well....for the hybrid guys (I am one), do you use alternate or something else when you are only using the plectrum. I lean toward strict altenate (I think).

I voted finger-style because I probably wouldn't have a pick unless an unfortunate turtle happened to visit. Then I'd have some picks and turtle soup.

    I choose Brett Garsed style.
He incorporates a bit of everything.

perhaps the premise needs improving. How can being on a dessert island restrict picking?

For example, you are abducted by aliens who inform you that the world will end unless you try to carry on your guitar endevours, but very carefully only choosing and using 1 picking style otherwise your family and friends will all die and your hands will explode?

Also, surely the only answer to this is hybrid (you can most of all the others with hybrid)

Finally, and a serious question, what is the name for the Gypsy Jazz style of picking (mostly down picks where possible but also using sweep like downstrokes and alternate depending on string choice)?

That would sort of fall under economy-picking.

Edit: although it has become known as Gypsy Picking too

This is the best desert island poll ever.

Alternate. (That's all I can do well anyways.)

sweep and hybrid are like additional techniques, you still need to pick either alternate or economy right? Sweep = economy right?
